Re: 2008 AHDRA Screamin’ Eagle Performance Parts Arizona Bike Week Nationals @ Speedworld Dragstrip in Whittmann, AZ.
The 2008 AHDRA National Tour headed west to hot and sunny Arizona for the second stop of the tour for the Screamin’ Eagle Performance Parts Arizona Bike Week Nationals.
STREET-PRO; Andy Simon once again came out with a 9.143 ET @ 147.07 MPH to claim the #1 qualifier position. While in the 3 rounds of qualifying on Saturday, Andy was experimenting with some new ideas on his hot rod. However, come race day on Sunday, it was strictly business as Andy was the only Street-Pro to go into the 8 second zone all weekend! Andy wrapped up the weekend in the final against Danny Worth where Andy ran a 8.942 ET @ 150.70 MPH to claim the victory.
HOT-STREET; Up and coming Hot-Street rider Charlie Cannon was back in action after putting a new motor under him to run in Arizona. Charlie qualified at # 3 with a 10.259 ET @ 127.13 MPH. Charlie Cannon put the 2007 National Champion Charley Douglass on the trailer in the first round to go into the semi’s. In the semi-final Charlie ran a 10.237 to a 10.200 ending his race weekend. The margin of victory was less than 4 one hundredths of a second. Looks like we will be back on the dyno to squeeze some more power out of this hot rod.
SUPER-SPORT; Gary DeGrange qualifies # 4 , Danny Boyer qualifies # 7, and Joey Thomson qualifies # 13 this weekend in the ultra competitive Super-Sport class. The first round of competition brought a double breakout for DeGrange who broke out by 1 one thousandth of a second more than his opponent. Joey Thomson got a first round win to advance into the 2nd round where he lost on a hole shot while running a perfect dial in at 10.300! Both engines are powered by Andy Simon built engines and were equipped with the new Simon’s Competition Throttle Stop kit.
SUPER ELIMINATOR; Rookie Joey Thomson who was competing in only his 2nd ever drag race event on his new Simon’s prepared Super Eliminator bike was the # 1 Qualifier!!! However Joey lost in the first round to end his week end. Also competing was Bill Rowe, Jr who lost in a first round red light, and Danny Boyer who went through 3 rounds to compete in the semi-final round where his race weekend ended with a red light start. Like Super-Sport, this class is ultra competitive.
RACE NOTES...
Dan Hope, rider of the famous 9 second street legal Heritage Springer took a wild ride after he hit the nitrous button in 2nd gear. The bike went into a wild wheel stand and went back and forth uncontrollably. Fortunately, Dan was able to hang on and gather up the bike with out going down.
Also, Mike Roberts the 2007 SSC 124 National Champion broke a piston and had a set flown in overnight on a passenger airplane. The pistons were picked up at the airport, and once at the race track, Mike called on Andy Simon to help him hone the cylinders, fit the new pistons, and re-assemble the engines top end. Mike went on to win the event in the finals on Sunday.
The next race on the 2008 AHDRA National Tour is at the Gateway International Raceway in Madison, IL. The Gypsy Rendezvous Nationals takes place on April 19-20. Preparations are already underway for the upcoming event at Gateway.
